This was not conceived as a fund raising event. Indeed I am not comfortable about asking people to sponsor me to do something that I quite like to do anyway. However I have been overwhelmed with inquiries (two actually) from people who thought I should use the event to raise some money for charity (and were actually willing to hand over money). I do have reason to be sympathetic to the idea.
About eighteen months ago I was told that I was suffering from a condition which could well be cancer and either way needed major surgery. It looked like cycling days might be over though cycling was well down the list of concerns at the time. It wasn’t cancer. I survived the surgery and lived to ride again. In hospital I met one or two people who were not so lucky. It is hard to imagine what it must be like to go through what I went through then face months or years of chemotherapy or radiotherapy, often in the knowledge that briefly staving off the inevitable is your best or only hope. It therefore seemed like a decent idea to use this ride, which is really no more than a reckless assertion of my own good fortune, to raise a bit of money to help those less fortunate.
